The apprenticeship lasts 3 years and combines work based training with a customized syllabus at LEMAs training centre. During the course, the recruits will be trained in a variety of manufacturing skills relevant to the presswork industry, including engineering operations, lean processes and engineering technologies. The end qualification will be an Apprenticeship in Engineering Manufacture, with the final stages of the programme being tailored to a career pathway selected by the apprentice and the company together.
H T Brigham, is particularly keen to close the skills gap in the area of press toolmaking. This is where many people start their careers in the metal pressing industry, often acting as a firm platform, from which an individual can follow avenues into other areas of presswork, such as management or sales. However, pressing companies will always need press toolmakers and if young toolmakers are leaving the trade, then the skills pool obviously decreases.
The stamping companys initial apprentice intakes, Richard and Sam, are both local school leavers.
