Midlands based metal presswork manufacturer, H T Brigham is pleased to announce the start of a brand new apprenticeship scheme, a goal which the pressing company has had for some time. The programme, which started on 23rd April 2014, will be run in union with the Birmingham based LEMA training facility.

The apprenticeship lasts 3 years and combines work based training with a customized syllabus at LEMA’s training centre. During the course, the recruits will be trained in a variety of manufacturing skills relevant to the presswork industry, including engineering operations, lean processes and engineering technologies. The end qualification will be an Apprenticeship in Engineering Manufacture, with the final stages of the programme being tailored to a career pathway selected by the apprentice and the company together.

H T Brigham, is particularly keen to close the skills gap in the area of press toolmaking. This is where many people start their careers in the metal pressing industry, often acting as a firm platform, from which an individual can follow avenues into other areas of presswork, such as management or sales. However, pressing companies will always need press toolmakers and if young toolmakers are leaving the trade, then the skills pool obviously decreases.

The stamping company’s initial apprentice intakes, Richard and Sam, are both local school leavers. H T Brigham MD, Barry Smith said, ‘We are very pleased to welcome these new intakes to our presswork company. The skills gap in the manufacturing and engineering sectors must be filled. Encouraging our youngsters into these sectors is vital to the future of our industry’
